The scheme involved the improvement of access and movement around the Ongar area for pedestrians and cyclists and aimed to connect residents’ desired destinations and places including local schools, parks and amenities, shops and public transport. New dedicated cycle tracks and controlled crossing facilities have been provided to make it easier and safer to travel around the area. A number of roundabouts were upgraded as part of the scheme. These upgrades included the widening of the circular carriageway at some locations and the provision of zebra crossings on some arms.
The Ongar Cycle Network Scheme was implemented by former Minister for Transport Leo Varadkar, and is part of a range of walking, cycling and public transport projects in the Dublin 15 area, achieved through government funding of €1.8 million.

The Audit Team completed a day time and night time inspections of the scheme, involving walking and driving through the scheme to identifying all road safety issues that may result in collisions or hazards to motorists, cyclists and pedestrians.
