PMCE were appointed by Wexford County Council to conduct a pilot project to design solutions for safety issues raised through the Road Safety Inspection (RSI) process. The project included six sites identifying issues relating to poor junction layouts, insufficient VRU/cyclist provisions and visibility splays.
The design process included continuous engagement with the client and representatives of Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). Multiple site visits were conducted where additional safety issues were identified at each of the sites and were addressed through the design process. Additional data was also collected to support the design process at several sites including a 7-day cyclist survey through a junction with a high percentage of HGV’s.
PMCE developed new reporting formats for each of the sites which gave a detailed description of the RSI process and the issues raised, as well as the production of detailed design drawings, cost estimates and further recommendations.
The reports developed by PMCE and the key findings of the pilot project can now be used in further RSI design projects resulting in a tailored and efficient design process. PMCE would like to thank Tim Murphy, Senior Executive Engineer, Roads Department of Wexford County Council for his guidance and support during the design process.
